Match Reports 1999

Match Reports

Burton League outfit, Elford Cricket Club is preparing for the forthcoming season in style with the building of a new club scorebox. It is hoped to start construction next month and the building should be completed by the middle of the season. Elford is embarking on a promising season with teams at all levels competing in local leagues and tournaments. The juniors are fielding sides at Under 11, 13 and 15 levels and will be hoping to build on the success of last years victories. At a senior level the 1 st team, led by Ben Hughes, will be pushing for promotion in the highly competitive Burton & District league Division 2, while the 2nds under the new captaincy of Dave Riley are hoping to build on last years ups and downs in Division 3. Elford is once again fielding a side on a Sunday, competing in the Lichfield & District League. New faces are always welcome, and anyone interested in joining this local and friendly team can contact John Ross on 01543 256269.

Wilnecote Sun XI Vs Elford Sun XI (Friendly) - Sunday 25 th April 1999

Despite the terrible weather conditions experienced throughout the week, Elford were able to start their 1999 campaign with a Sunday friendly at Wilnecote. After losing the toss, Elford were put into bat on a damp and slow wicket. Gary Allen and Rob Wright opened the batting for Elford and got them off to a blistering start, with Allen hitting 3 fours off the first 3 balls. However Allen succumbed to the Wilnecote attack 3 balls later, being bowled by Chaplain for 12. An elevated Jamie Woodall continued the Elford attack but was dismissed for only 4. A steady partnership between Skipper Mark Twomlow and Rob Wright saw a steady flow of runs before Wright was caught hitting out for 30. Danny Haines continued the high run rate scoring 4 of 4 balls before being bowled by the experienced Corcoran. A middle order collapse followed with Tony Allen and Dave Riley chipping in with runs before Eric Dodd steadied the innings with 21 not out, which was only marred by his comical run out of stand in player Dave Stevens. Elford finished their innings on 129 all out, with Chaplian and Corcoran the pick of the bowlers for Wilnecote.

In reply Wilnecote found it hard to score off the opening bowling from Mick Hodgkinson (0 for 9 0ff 5) and Anthony Wright (1 for 6 off 5), who applied the early pressure very well. Wilnecote, however, picked up the pace and the runs started to flow, especially from K Boyall who top scored hitting 41 before being beaten for pace by G Allen . D Haines and J Woodall were unlucky not two pick up a wicket before M Twomlow came on to bowl a good spell at the end. However Wilnecote kept their heads and gained victory in a close local contest winning by 6 wickets in the final few overs.

Appleby Magna 1sts Vs Elford 1sts | BDCL Div 2 - Saturday 1st May 1999

A youthful Elford 1 st team crashed to an 8-wicket defeat to Division 2 newcomers Appleby Magna. Winning the toss, Skipper Ben Hughes elected to bat on a dubious looking early season pitch.

The Elford batsman found the conditions increasing hard to play on with only the Allen brothers putting up and substantial resistance to the Appleby attack. Gary Allen hit a quick fire 26, while younger brother Tony , hit a respectable 15. Elford eventually ended on 89 all out.

In reply Danny Haines (0 for 19 off 10) and Brain Found (0 for 13 off 10) contained the Appleby openers well before Steve Gould came on and took 2 well earned wickets. However it was all in vain as C Kirkland led Appleby to an eventual victory leaving Elford with a solitary point in an 8 wicket defeat.

Elford 2nds Vs Yoxall | BDCL Div 3

The seconds however opened the season with an impressive 4-wicket victory over Yoxall. Young pace bowlers Anthony Wright and Alex Gray took the wickets as Elford reduced Yoxall to 104-6. In reply some steady batting from Mark Twomlow 19, newcomer Ben Nicholas 13 not out and Tim Whitehouse 15 not out led Elford to an 9-3 point victory.

Elford Sun XI Vs Centre Set | Friendly - SUNDAY 2 nd MAY 1999

The Elford Sunday XI (with an average age of just under 21) were unlucky not to pick up their first victory of the year as they lost by 36 runs to local rivals Center Set. Elevated Skipper Danny Haines put Center Set into bat on a good flat early season Elford track. With a mixture of good, tight fast seem bowling and athletic fielding, Elford held Center set to 153-5 off 45 overs. The bowling from G Allen, D Haines, J Woodall and J Riley was especially good as they frustrated the Center Set Batsman.

However the Elford batsman struggled from the start with only G Allen 28, Mark Twomlow 20 and James Riley putting up any major resistance as the Elford innings eventually petered out at 118 ao, 36 short of their target. The highlight of the day though, was the spectacular diving, overhead one handed catch from Andy Deakin in his first game of the season.

Elford 1sts Vs Hartshone 1sts | BDCL Div 2 Saturday 8 th May

Elford's first chance of victory this year were washed out as torrential rain forced the south Staffordshire side to abandon its division 2 game with Derbyshire outfit Hartshorne.

Elford had reduced the visitors to 79 for 6 before the teams were forced off. Although the rain did die off, Hartshorne were reluctant to rejoin the field. Elford however will be pleased with a spirited fielding and bowling performance which saw Dan Haines , Gaz Allen , Mark Twomlow and Rob Drabble all picking up their first league wickets of the year.

It was a similar story of frustration with the 2 nds who were playing Hartshorne 2nds away. Elford had reduced Hartshorne to 90 for 6 before rain washed any chance of play away. The performance of the day though, was Birthday boy Jamie Woodall who took a spectacular one handed diving catch.

Tutbury 2nds Vs Elford 1sts | BDCL Div 2 Saturday 15 th may

Elford 1 st team finally got their first win of the season with the demolition of Tutbury 2nds. After losing the toss, the initial signs weren't promising, as Elford were sent into bat on a pitch notorious for low scores. To unsettle the Elford batsman further Steve Found fell to a second ball duck in only the 2 nd over. However the Elford batsman fought back through Ben Woodall who hit a quick 46 supported by Brian Found (16) and a splendid 42 from newcomer Matt Perry.

Defending an impressive score of 173 the Elford opening bowlers made steady progress with Danny Haines claiming 3 wickets for 16 off 10 overs and Rob Drabble with the economical figures of 1 for 11 of 12 that included 6 maidens. Brain Found and Steve Gould continued the tight bowling with some excellent spin bowling before Gaz Allen finished the tail off ending on the figures 3 for 12 off 8. Tutbury eventually reached 78-9, just managing to claim a point in the penultimate over. A fine 11-point victory for an ever-improving young Elford side.

Elford 2nds Vs Woodville 2nds | BDCL Div 3

The seconds also continued their fine early season form by beating Woodville. Elford had reduced the visitors to 92 all out with Mick Hodgkinson the destroyer in chief taking 5 wickets while E Dodd back from injury claimed 3 slip catches. In replay the Elford batsman made steady progress, so steady in fact that it took opener John Ross to make 29 in 48 overs. Stand in Geoff Hackett also supplied a steady stream of runs scoring a debut 28. Elford eventually won by 5 wickets in the 51 st over!

Essington & Great Wyrley Sun XI Vs Elford Sun XI | LDCL Div 3

Elford Sunday XI found themselves in familiar territory as they suffered their first league defeat of the season to Great Wyrley.

After sending Wyrley into bat the Elford bowlers worked hard to restrict the batsman using no less than 8 bowlers. Stuart Bailey claimed his first wicket of the season while Anthony Wright bowled well taking 2 for 26 off 9 supported by Ben Hughes, (making a rare Sunday team appearance!) and Dan Haines 1 for 18 off 9.

The Elford batsman however never got to grips with the ever improving conditions with only Dave Riley (30) putting up and substantial resistance. The rest of the Elford batsman will thank me for not displaying their scores! Elford eventually finished on 91, 46 runs short.

Elford 1sts Vs Barton 2nds | BDCL Div 2 - May 22nd 1999

Elford 1 st team crashed to a disappointing home defeat at the hands of Barton 2nds at the weekend. After losing the toss, the Elford batsman failed to cope with a good tight seem attack from Barton. Only Brian Found (36), Steve Found (20) and Stuart Aubury, (playing his first game in two years) managed to make notable score. The pick of the Barton bowlers was young Elford U15 bowler A Young who took match winning figures of 6 for 17. Elford eventually finished on 124 all out, with only 32 of their 45 overs used.

With only 125 in 57 overs needed it was always going to be a struggle for the Elford bowlers. Although the Elford bowling attack was as tight as ever the Barton batsman eased to 125-4, with the pick of the Elford bowlers being Gary Allen picking up 2 for 22.

Walton 2nds Vs Elford 2nds | BDCL Div 3

Elford's gloom continued further with the Seconds losing their unbeaten streak in Division 3. Visiting Walton, the home side hit 179 ao, Mick Hodgekinson taking 4 –38 supported well from Anthony Wright 3 –36. Once again it was a lack of batting that let the club down, as Elford managed to reach 120 ao with only Dave Riley (31) and Mick Hogekinson 25* making any sizeable total.

Elford Sun Vs Rugeley 2nds | LDCL Div 3

Fielding a side with only 2 players over the age of 19 Elfords Sunday XI struggled to contain an experienced Rugeley outfit. The early signs however had been good as promoted skipper Danny Haines sent Rugeley into bat on a lively Elford track. Excellent fielding and tight bowling had reduced the visitors to 15 –3 before K & N Pagett put a partnership of 94 together to steer Rugeley to 175 – 8. Jamie Woodall was the pick of the Elford bowlers going for only 8 runs off 9 overs. Elford batting blushes was saved from some sensible batting from A Wright 19, J Boden 20 and a lucky 24* from J Paulson. Elford finally finished on 118 ao.

Marchington 2nds Vs Elford 1sts | BDCL Div 2 - 29 May 1999

Elfords chances of winning their second game of the season were thwarted yet again by the weather. Led by skipper Ben Hughes (59) and Gaz Allen (82 Not out which included 6 six's!), Elford made their highest score of the season hitting 278-7 off 45 overs. Ben Woodall (33, caught slogging on the boundary) and Bob Aubury (28) had laid the early foundations as Elford put last weeks disappointment behind them and batted superbly from the start.

However that was as far as Elford luck went as the heavens opened and the teams were forced off the field in a terrific thunderstorm. Even more disappointing for Elford was the fact that Danny Haines (2 for 11) and Gary Allen (1 for 6) had reduced Marchington to 18 for 3.

Elford 2nds Vs Swadlincote | BDCL Div 3

It was a similar story of frustration for the seconds who were playing host to Swadlincote. Swad batting first had been reduced to 48-5 before recovering to 148 all out with Anthony Wright taking 4 wickets yet again. However Elford were forced off the field at 71 –3, Dave Basset top scoring on a rather fortunate 33 Not Out after being dropped first ball. Skipper Dave Riley had ground out the foundations of the innings scoring 1 off 15 overs!

Elford Sun XI Vs Roos Sun XI | Friendly - 30th May 1999

The Sunday team had a break from the league and played host to Roos a touring side from Hull. Although the game was only 25 overs each the teams were thankful as the weather conditions seemed to be reminiscent of winter! Brian Found 3 for 22 and Danny Haines 2 for 10 took the wickets as Roos scored 118 for 8. However only Dave Riley 27 and Brian Found 20 managed to achieve a score of ant note as Elford crumbled to 98 all out.

Elford 1sts Vs Robirch Phoenix | BDCL Div 2 -June 5 th 1999

Elford playing host to Robirch Phoenix slipped to a close defeat in yet another rainstorm. After skipper Ben Hughes lost the toss, Elford found themselves batting on an already damp track. Opener Steve Found fell to his third duck of the season before Bob Aubrey steadied the innings with a well-earned 24. Ben Hughes (34) and Matt Perry (35) guided Elford through the middle of innings while increasing the run rate as Elford had only scored 25 of the first 20 overs! Gaz Allen continued his good form hitting 38 before being bowled off the final ball of the innings.

Defending 164 (a sizeable score considering the conditions), Elford made an early break through when Danny Haines (2 for 38 0ff 12) bowled one of the Robirch openers for a Golden Duck. Despite the tight bowling the Robirch batsman took the game to Elford as only Gary Allen (1 – 29 off 6) and Rob Drabble (1- 38 off 12) managed to take a wicket. Robirch finally squeezed home victory in the final over of the game, condemning Elford to a 10 – 2 defeat.

Unfortunately the 2nds game with Uttoxeter had been called off on the Friday night while Sundays fixture against Armitage also fell to the same fate, being called off on the Saturday evening.

Kings Bromley 1sts Vs Elford 1sts | BDCL Div 2 - June 12 th 1999

Elfords 2 nd division game with Kings Bromley fell foul to weather yet again. After losing the toss Elford found themselves batting on a good hard flat track. With the sun out and the conditions improving it didn't seem such a bad toss to lose but Elford managed to shot themselves in the foot. The recruitment of John Ross from the Seconds looked a positive move before he was bowled for only 4. A middle order collapse insured as Ben Hughes, Danny Haines and Matt Perry were all dismissed in quick succession. However the innings was saved by Johnny Pickering who scored a half-century in his first game of the year. Steve Found had earlier held the innings together with 4 off 20 overs! Leading run scorer Gaz Allen batted sensibly for 21 before Rob Drabble smashed a quickfire 17 before being stumped a long way down the track. Elford finally finished on 137 all out. However the heavens opened over tea and play was eventually abandoned after several inspections due to standing water. Elford resorted to playing 5 a side football as Elfords 4 th game out of 8 was called off.

Elford 2nds Vs Hammerwich 2nds | BDCL Div 3

Elford seconds however had a better share of the luck as they demolished Hammerwich 2nds 11 –1. Elford had been in danger of winning 12 –0 but Alex Gray got himself out with only 4 runs needed to win. Elford had dismissed the visitors out for a poultry 96 with a mixture of great bowling and excellent fielding, Mick Hodekinson taking 4 wickets and Ant Wright 3. Tim Whitehouse led the attack scoring 45 not out supported by Alex Gray and Neil Taylor 11.

Elford Vs Cannock & Rugeley 2nds | LDCL Div 3 - June 13 th 1999

Elford Sunday XI played host to Cannock & Rugeley in a closely fought Division 3 game. C & R batting first made good work of a flat and steady Elford track scoring 159 –7 off their 45 overs. However the visitors imposed the league time rule which meant that because Elford hadn't bowled their allocated overs in time they lost 5 overs of their innings. Gaz Allen bowled a very economical 1 for 9 off 9 while Steve Gould bowled well for 2 for 20 off 9.

Fired up after losing the overs Elford set about reaching the total quickly. Mark Twomlow (back from business trips) and elevated Skipper Danny Haines opened the batting a quickly frustrated the opening bowlers. The pair batted well before Twomlow was caught behind for 39, ending a year best partnership of 71. Rob Wright supported well scoring 16 before Danny Haines was eventually bowled for 25. Elford then succeeded to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory as Elford crumbled to 147 – 8, losing by 11 runs to top of the league Cannock.

Elford 1sts Vs Belvedere Park 2nds | BDCL Div 2 - June 19 th 1999

Elford slipped to their 4 th defeat of the season in a poor performance against division 2 frontrunners Belvedere Park. On a good hard flat Elford track, Belvedere won the toss and batted first. However Elford will be pleased with a good bowling and fielding performance as they kept the visitors down to 186 – 9 on a track which should have produced 200 plus runs. Danny Haines 2 for 33 of 12, Gaz Allen 3 for 41 off 11 and Rob Drabble 2 for 46 off 11 were the pick of the Elford bowlers.

In reply Elford completely failed to apply themselves to the Belvedere bowling. Elford found themselves at 21 – 4 before Ben Hughes (33) and Danny Haines rescued the middle order putting 40 on between them. However the partnership didn't last long and Elford crumbled to 85 all out with Rob Drabble the only other batsman to hit double figures. A very disappointing result for Elford who must improve sooner rather than later if they are to make any push for the league. Hardly ideal preparation for Burton 2nds next week!

Elford 2nds Vs Whittington | BDCL Div 3

It was a similar story of disappointment from the seconds who were outclassed by Division 3 frontrunners Whittington. Batting first Whittington edged their way to 278 –4 with Andy Stone scoring 143* for the opposition. Tim Whitehouse 2 for 42 was the pick of the bowling attack, (which sadly missed the presence of Mick Hodkinson who has unfortunately broken his arm). In reply Elford couldn't cope with the swing bowling attack from Whittington and fell well short scoring only 146 before being bowled out. Skipper Dave Riley top scored on 22 supported from youngsters Ant Wright, James Found and Dave Basset who all scored 18 each.

Elford Sun Vs Hammerwich 2nds | LDCL Div 3 - June 20th 1999

Elford Sunday XI once again slipped to defeat at the hands of Hammerwich 2. Elford batting first hit 123 all out with Ben Hughes top scoring on a quickfire 34 supported by Dave Riley 29. Defending the modest total Gaz Allen (fired up from a pair of golden ducks) bowled superbly claiming 2 wickets for only 2 runs off 9 overs which included 8 maidens! Supported by Danny Haines 1 for 29 off 9 Elford had reduced the visitors to 15 – 3. However Elford couldn't sustain the attack and Hammerwich led by D Goodwin eventually reached 124 –6 leaving Elford facing a 9-3 defeat. Ant Wright also produced yet another good spell of bowling claiming 2 for 19 off 5.

Burton 2nds Vs Elford 1sts | BDCL Div 2 - June 26 th 1999

Elford's miserable season with the Bat continued as they slipped to defeat against Burton 2nds. After losing the toss a very youthful Elford did well to restrict the Burton batsman to 182-6 on a hard, dry flat track. Danny Haines 3 for 54 off 11, Gaz Allen an economical 1 for 31 off 12 and James Boden (who took his first wickets in the 1 st XI), 2 for 41 off 6 were the pick of the Elford attack.

Not for the first time this year it was Elfords batting which completely let the side down. After doing the hard work in the field a lack of batting application was their downfall. With the exception of Ben Hughes 34, Ben Woodall 26 and an unbeaten 18 from Rob Drabble the Elford batsmen will best forget about the game.

Elford 2nds Vs Ashby Town | BDCL Div 3

It was a similar story in the seconds where batting first Elford only managed to score 133. Tim Whitehouse top scored on 31 supported by Rob Aubury 23. However Elford will be pleased with the batting of the U13 contingent in the side which batted out the overs for the side. In reply Elfords modest total was to easy for title contenders Ashby who eased to a 7-wicket victory. Youngster James Tooze bowled well claiming 1 for 16 off 6 supported by Ant Wright 1 for 38 of 10. Neil Taylor also picked up his first wicket of the year.

Elford 1sts Vs Centre Set | BDCL Div 2 - July 3rd 1999

Elford finally returned to winning ways with a superb comeback against Division 2 unbeaten leaders Centre Set. However it was far from plain sailing for Elford who once again failed to achieve their full potential with the bat. Led by the return of Bob Aubury (10) and Steve Found (35) Elford started very steadily on a damp track. Leading run scorer Gary Allen continued his good form with a well-earned 28 supported by Matt Perry (20). Elford finally finished on 143 ao in 45 th over, some 20 – 30 runs short of what they expected.

As expected Centre Set started quickly execrating the run rate whenever they could despite the bowling efforts of Danny Haines and Gaz Allen. It wasn't until the arrival of Rob Drabble and Ben Woodall, (back from behind the stumps) that Center Set began to be pegged back with some excellent line and length bowling. From 94 –1 Centre Set crashed to 126 all out with a tremendous effort from the bowlers supported by an excellent fielding performance. Rob Drabble took 4 – 21 off 10, Ben Woodall 2 –21 0ff 12 (a brilliant performance for some one who hadn't bowled since May 98) while Danny Haines finished the innings off claiming 3 for 29 off 10. A tremendous result for Elford who never gave up, turning what looked like a 12-0 defeat into an 8-4 victory.

Coppice Unity Vs Elford 2nds | BDCL Div 3

Batting first on a lively track, Elford found it difficult to score with a tight Coppice bowling attack. Dave Riley top scored hitting 32 not out before running out of partners to reach his half century. Earlier Dave Basset (15) and James Boden (15) had set the Elford runs flowing despite the ball flying around off the pitch. Elford's innings finally petered out at 128 ao. A Hill (4-41) was the pick of the Coppice attack.

Elford made the best of their bowling attack despite the small total as James Boden (after being dropped from the 1sts) took 3 – 42 leading the Elford fight back. At one point Elford had looked like winning the game as Coppice faltered to 72 –5 before N.Moss (38) led the home side to a 4-wicket victory over Elford.

Elford Sun XI Vs The Gate Inn Sun XI | Friendly - 4 th July 1999

Elford took a break from the league and played host to the Gate Inn from Amington. Batting first Elford hit their biggest total by far this season scoring 293 off their 45 overs. Mark Twomlow (81), Gaz Allen (63) and James Boden (44*) led the Elford charge. J Smith (2 – 29) was the pick of the Gate bowlers, all of whom bowled well despite the huge Elford total. James Boden continued an excellent weekend claiming 5 for 31 supported by Ant Wright 3 for 9. Interestingly it was the no 11 batsman for the Gate, Andy Fairfield who topped scored hitting 17 before being stumped! The Gate finally finished on 96 all out, losing by 197 runs.

Trentside 2nds Vs Elford 1sts | BDCL Div 2 - 10 th July 1999

Elford continued their winning streak with a comfortable 10-2 victory over 2 nd placed Trentside. After Skipper Ben Hughes lost yet another toss this season Elford found themselves fielding in the blistering heat. Unsurprisingly Trentside started well on a good flat batting track despite the bowling efforts from Danny Haines and Gary Allen (2 for 39 off 7). Ben Woodall was also unlucky not to pick up a wicket with another very tight spell. However the recent good form of Rob Drabble continued as he claimed season best figures of 5 for 22 off 12, destroying the middle order with the help of Ben Hughes ( 3 for 32 off 8). Trentside finally crashed to 156 all out after only 40 overs.

Once again though Elford struggled early on with the bat, with Steve Found falling to a quick duck followed in quick succession by Bob Aubury (7). However the in form Ben Hughes steadied the Elford innings with a well carved out 28 supported by Ben Woodall 19. James Riley broke his sequence of recent ducks with a well-crafted 8, which could have been many, more before he was bowled to a near “jaffa”. However it was the arrival of John Pickering and Gary Allen that proved the biggest success as both played superbly taking the Trentside attack to pieces, guiding Elford to a 5 wicket Victory. Pickering finished on 37 not out while Allen continue to increase his average yet further with 45 not out. Another great victory for Elford who now claim back up to 9 th in the Division 2.

Elford 2nds Vs Wilnecote 2nds | BDCL Div 3

Elford 2nds slipped to a 4-wicket defeat against local rivals Wilnecote. Batting first Elford hit a season best 204- 9. Dave Riley 43, Neil Taylor 34 and Jamie Woodall 32 led the Elford innings although there were contributions from all the batsman. In reply though Wilnecote raced away with only Tim Whitehouse causing concern to the batsman as Wilnecote reached the total with the loss of 6 wickets leaving Elford with a 9 – 3 defeat.

Elford Sun XI Vs Essington & Great Wyrley | LDCL Div 3 - 11 th July 1999

Elford Sunday XI slided to yet another defeat in the Lichfield & District Division 3, at the hands of Great Wryley. After surprisingly being put into bat Great Wryley must have been regretting their decision as Elford raced away at almost 7 an over, reaching 90 – 1 in only 15 overs. However when Gaz Allen was caught for 18 the innings started to falter. Opener Ben Hughes fell shortly after hitting an almost unstoppable 74 in 20 overs. A middle order collapse insured as Elford faltered to 118 for 8. However a 9yh wicket partnership between the experienced Dave Riley (25) and youngster James Tooze (6*) led Elford to 158 all out in the final over.

In reply Wryley carved open the Elford openers before Danny Haines made an early break through. Gary Allen bowled in vain, going for only 17 runs off 8 overs. The introduction of Jamie Woodall was an instant success as he claimed 3 for 24 off 5 overs, while Ben Hughes also bowled well claiming 1 for 7 off 3. However Wryley reached 159 for loss of 7 wickets in the 38 th over. Elford will pleased with 3 points out of the game when at one stage 1 would have been lucky!

Elford 1sts Vs Appleby Magna | BDCL Div 2 - July 17 th 1999

Elford came back down to earth with a bump with an 11- 1 defeat against division 2 title chasers Appleby Magna. After losing the toss, Elford were sent in on a fairly green and lively track. The combination of the early life in the pitch and the tight seem attack caused problems right from the start as Bob Aubury was quickly dismissed to a ball which kept unusually low. Steve Found (15) and Gary Allen (once again including 2 sixes!) (23) coped with the bowling well, before Ben Hughes also (23) smashed a few boundaries. The combination of John Ross (12) and Matt Perry (27) steadied the innings guiding Elford from 65 –4 to 113 – 5. However a lower order collapse insured as the remaining batsman pushed the score to 133 all out.

In reply Elford made an early brake through with Dan Haines as Richardson edged a ball to the wicket Keeper. Unbelievably the Umpire said not out and Appleby “edged” their way to 73 –1 before Richardson was eventually out for 39 to Ben Hughes. Haines took a catch Rob Drabble took the However 133 was never a realistic target to defend and Appleby cruised to an 8 wicket victory. A disappointing defeat for Elford who stay 9 th in Division 2.

Yoxall Vs Elford 2nds | BDCL Div 3

In a good-humoured game at Yoxall, Elford picked up their first victory of the month with an 8-4 victory. Batting first Elford hit 187 –9 with the “old boy” combination of Brian Found (40), Erik Dodd (in his first game for over 2 months) (36) and Neil Taylor (30), supported by youngster Ant Wright 19*. In reply Elford managed to restrict Yoxall to 162 –9 with Tim Whitehouse taking 3 – 25 while Brian Found (back from injury) rounded a very good personal performance taking 3 –37.

Rugeley 2nds Vs Elford Sun XI | LDCL Div 3 - July 18 th 1999

A very youthful looking Elford side slipped to their biggest defeat of the year to 3 rd placed Rugeley 2nds in the Lichfield Sunday Division 3. Rugeley batting first on an excellent batting track hit a massive 271 – 6 causing a lot of frustration to the Elford bowlers. K Pagett was the main problem as stormed to 138 before being caught off the bowling from Ant Wright, who picked up 3 – 38. Elford needing their biggest score of the season to gain a single point were always up against it. With nothing to lose Elford went straight at the bowling with Wicket Keeper Rob Wright and Skipper Danny Haines opening, hitting 52 for the first wicket, of which 42 was Wrights! Haines quickly followed before Gaz Allen smashed 78 supported well by Ant Wright 18 and Dave Riley 9. In the end though Elford faltered to 185 all out, enough to gain a point but not enough to win the game with their highest score of the year!

Hartshorne 1 st Vs Elford 1sts | BDCL Div 2 - July 24 th 1999

Elford continued to extend their losing streak even though they hit 239 –6 off 45 overs. Batting first the Elford batsman played the ball very well scoring quickly despite some tight bowling. Brian Found back in firsts hit 17, while skipper Ben Hughes hit 25. Gaz Allen took advantage of the short boundaries launching 8 boundaries in no time to score 44. Ben Woodall hit his highest score of the year scoring 85 not out, including 12 fours and 3 sixs. J Pickering hit a good 28, before the return of ex club captain Dave Ling (making his first appearance in a long time for the club), hit a solid 18.

In reply though the Elford bowlers couldn't get to grips with the Hartshorne batsman who blasted the ball into every corner of the ground. Rob Drabble took a creditable 2 46 0ff 12 while Ben Hughes bowled very well for 3 – 37. Danny Haines took a one handed catch at the end to claim another point but it was in vain as Hartshorne squeezed to victory in the 43 over. Elford are left once again with an 8-4 defeat, which could have easily gone the other way.

Elford 2nds vs Hartshorne 2nds | BDCL Div 3

In the reverse fixture the 2nds did little to improve the clubs spirits. Batting first Elford only managed 139 ao, Dave Riley the top scorer hitting 49, (which incurred a massive jug evasion fine), while Dave Crowder hit 18 supported by Ant Wright 18. Hartshorne eased to 140 –4 leaving Elford with a 10-2 win. Tim Whitehouse was the pick of the Elford bowlers picking up 1 –22 0ff 12. Neil Taylor was the fielder of day catching a superb shot, (or so he tells me!)

Armitage 2nds Vs Elford Sun XI | LDCL Div 3 - July 25 th 1999

Elford recorded their first league win of the year with the 12 –0 point demolition of Armitage. In a game, which both teams desperately needed to win, Elford finally achieved the form that many of the players have lacked this year. After Skipper Danny Haines lost the toss Elford were amazingly sent into bat on a good hard track in the sun. Openers Rob Wright and Danny Haines set about another big total before Haines was caught in the slips for 8 with the score at 46 –1. Leading run scorer Gary Allen continued his fine form hitting a massive 72 in 44 balls including 11 fours, while Rob Wright hit his biggest ever total for the club scoring 82 in a mere 67 balls. The pair put on 112 together guiding Elford to 158 – 2. Steve Found, (lucky to survive a few good LBW shouts) went on to score 25 in his first game for the Sunday side while Jamie Woodall hit 22 his highest score on a Sunday. Ant wright hit 14 while the remainder of the lower order chipped with runs pushing Elford on to 259 ao in the final over.

Danny Haines opening the bowling for the time this year on a Sunday proved an instant success as he took 3 – 25 off 9 supported excellently by the swing bowling of Tony Allen who took 2 – 17 off 6. Armitage at one stage were 19 – 5 before they pushed the run rate on until youngster James Tooze took his first wicket for the seniors on a Sunday, supported by the pace of Ant Wright who took 2 – 2 off 5 overs! Steve Gould also bowled very economically going for only 13 off 8 overs. Armitage finally finished on 133 – 8 off 45 overs, leaving Elford to win by 126 runs. A superb result for a very young Elford side who still had 2 players over the age of 19 in the side!

Elford 1sts Vs Tutbury 2nds | BDCL Div 2 - 31 st July 1999

Elford posted an excellent all round team performance with a crushing 11 – 1 point victory over 6 th placed Tutbury. After losing the toss Elford showed real spirit in the field dismissing the visitors for a mere 72. Ben Woodall returned season best figures of 3 for 24 off 12, while Ben Hughes bowled extremely economically taking 2 – 6 off 8 overs. Rob Drabble took a well-earned 1 for 15 while Gaz Allen (reluctant to bowl at first) took a match winning figures of 4 – 17 off 8 overs.

In reply the visitors made an early break through claiming the wicket of Bob Aubury with the second ball off the innings. However Ben Hughes (18), 15 of which came from the first over he faced) and Gaz Allen 31(including 6 fours) led Elford to victory. David Ling 13* in 4 balls and Matt Perry 10* Finished the job off as Elford completed the days play at only 5.45!

Woodville 2nds Vs Elford 2nds | BDCL Div 3

An Elford second XI with only 3 players over 15 crashed to 12 –0 defeat in a relegation dogfight with Woodville. Batting first Woodville hit 220 and proceeded to bowl Elford out for under100. On a brighter note Brian Found hit a half-century while youngster Stu McNish took 3 catches behind the Stumps.

Cannock & Rugeley 2nds Vs Elford Sunday XI | LDCL Div 3 - 1 August 1999

Elfords rise up the Sunday league was halted by a terrific thunderstorm at title chasers Cannock and Rugeley. With thunder already being heard at the toss, injured skipper Danny Haines decided to bat at let Elford try and set a big total in what almost certainly would be a rain effected game. Eric Dodd returning to the Sunday side hit 16 while Rob Wright also 16 and Gaz Allen 14 smashed the ball around the park at every opportunity. However in a mixture of a dust storm, hail and lighting play was halted after only an hour's play. With a downpour insuring the teams were unable to return to the field despite the efforts of the home side who desperately wanted to play to increase their chances of promotion. The game was eventually abandoned at 6.00, with both teams picking up 3 points.

Barton 2nds VS Elford 1sts | BDCL Div 2 - 7 th August 1999

Once again it was a lack of batting that let the side down as Elford were bowled out for 113. Batting first after losing an important toss, Elford found themselves in familiar territory as early wickets started to fall. First of the casualties was skipper Ben Hughes who was dismissed for only 4. Erik Dodd (7) and Dave Ling who got a second ball duck quickly followed him. Gaz Allen 13 (including 3 fours) posed signs of a comeback before Ben Woodall hit a fine 33 supported by Danny Haines (6) who batted out 12 overs between them. Rob Drabble smashed a quickfire 21 (including 3 excellent cover drives!) while Dave Basset (promoted to the Firsts) (5) offered a spree of runs at the end as Elford crashed to 113 all out in the 29 th over.

With only 114 needed in 60 overs it was always going to be a problem for the Elford bowlers to contain the Barton batsman. However showing real spirit Ben Woodall 3 for 16 off 12 led the Elford fight back, completely outdoing and baffling the batsman time and time again. Ben Hughes 1 for 30 and Rob Drabble 3 for 28 supported the attack superbly, while the injured due of Danny Haines and Gaz Allen bowled with out luck. However the target was just to small and Barton reached the total for loss off 7 wickets. The most annoying point for Elford was the fact that the homeside were at one point 50 for 7 !

Elford 2nds Vs Walton 2nds | BDCL Div 3

It was a similar story with the seconds who were playing hosts to Division 3 title chasers Walton. Play eventually started at 4.00pm with each innings reduced to 30 overs. Elford lost the toss and were put into bat. At one stage Elford were at 19 –4 before the experienced due of John Ross (38) and Dave Riley (33) steered Elford past the ton. Elford finally finished on 102 – 7.

Tim Whitehouse 2 –29 and Tony Allen 1 for 15 were the pick of the Elford bowlers but he target was just too small, as Walton reached 103 for the loss of 5 wickets.

Elford 1sts Vs Marchington 2nds | BDCL Div 2 - 14 th July 1999

Elfords chances of a victory over bottom placed Marchington were dashed by the weather yet again. In similar circumstances to earlier in the season Elford had once again built up a big total before the rain dashed the bowlers chances. To make things worse for Elford, Marchington had already lost 3 of their 8 wickets (due to only having 9 players) at the time the rain came down.

After losing the toss Elford were put into bat on a damp track yet again this season. Keeping the old traditions going Elford quickly faltered to 24 – 4 before Ben Woodall 46 and Matt Perry hitting his first half century club steered the side past 170 for the loss of 7 wickets. Rob Drabbles efforts went unrewarded as started to make huge in roads into the visitors claiming 3 wickets in the space of 5 overs. However after 3 steady showers the sides were forced off the field for good after the 4 th shower. A huge disappointment for the side who would have almost certainly picked up more than the 3 points they did for the abandoned game.

Swadlinecote Vs Elford 2nds | BDCL Div 3

Batting first Elford made the best of a difficult pitch as the ball flew in all directions despite the dampness of the pitch and the rain. Skipper Dave Riley led the way as he scored a season best 61 supported by Brian Found 24 and Ant Wright 25 Not Out. Elford finally finished on 158 –9. In reply Ant Wright led the way taking 2 for 14 before game was abandoned with Swad at 34 – 2.

Elford Sunday XI Vs Acton Trussell | BDCL Div 3 - August 15 1999

Elford lost their final Sunday league game of the year in a very close game with mid placed Acton Trussell. Batting first Elford struggled to contain the low bounce as Danny Haines 4 and Rob Wright 13 quickly departed. However the inform Ben Hughes smashed 65 supported by Erik Dodd 26. James Paulson smashed his highest score for the club scoring 29 in a very short space of time before Dave Riley held the bottom of the innings together scoring 27 not out. Elford finally finished on 208 all out in the 42 nd over. However Acton Trussell managed to reach the total in the 44 th over with 4 wickets remaining. Danny Haines 1 for 38 off 8, James Tooze 2 for 22 off 4, Steve Gould 2 for 24 and Ben Hughes 1 for 22 all bowled very well despite Acton Trussell creeping to the total eventually.

Elford CC would also like to announce the sad news that former player and umpire Bert Cox has passed away. Many will remember him for his work not only for Elford but cricket in and around Tamworth over the last 50 years.

Robirch Phoenix Vs Elford 1sts | BDCL Div 2 - 21 st August 1999

Elford returned to winning ways with a comfortable victory over lowly Robirch. Batting first on a very pale looking wicket the early signs were good as Brian Found back in the firsts hit a quickfire 25. Bob Aubury's miserable luck with the bat continued as he went for a duck before Ben Nicholas in his first game in 3 months hit 13 supported by Ben Woodall 14. The only trouble was that although the runs were flowing so were the wickets as Elford slipped to 60 – 6. However the combination of Alex Gray (promoted to the 1 st despite scoring no runs in the 2nds) and Danny Haines seemed to steady the ship as the pair put on 50 between them, (although Haines only scored 4 of them!). Nether the less it set up the final batsman up to smash out. Rob Drabble duley did as he scored 23 in no time. The star of the innings though was youngster Alex Gray who finished on 75 Not out leading Elford to 178 – 7.

In reply all the Ben Hughes and Ben Woodall made early in roads into the Robirch batsman reducing them to 29 – 3 at one point. Danny Haines (taking his first Saturday wicket in almost 2 months) and Rob Drabble continued the pressure on the Robirch Batsman. Skipper Ben Hughes finished with match winning figures of 4 – 27, while Ben Woodall took 2 – 32. Drabble and Haines supported the pair taking a wicket a piece. Robirch finally finished on 137 – 8.

Elford 2nds Vs Uttoxeter 2nds | BDCL Div 3

Elford seconds however didn't suffer the same fortune as the 1sts as they were hammered 12 – 0 at home to Uttoxeter. Batting first Elford hit a respectable 165 – 6 led by Eric Dodd 58, John Ross 31 and former Alrewas captain Malcolm Prince 39 (in his first game in 5 years!). However with the absence of some of the usual mainstream bowlers Uttoxeter took full advantage and knocked the total off for the loss of 1 wicket !

Former Premier division batsman John Shaw scored an unbeaten 100 leading the visitors to 12 points. Nail Taylor took the only Elford wicket with figures off 1 – 31 off 8.

Hammerwich Sun XI Vs Elford Sunday XI | Friendly22 August 1999

Elford Sunday side played a hastily arranged friendly with local rivals Hammerwich. Once again Elford fielding only 3 players over the age of 21 worked hard in the field to keep the home side down to 204 –6. Tony Allen 1 for 24, Danny Haines 2 – 43 and Stevey Gould 1 – 21 led the attack despite one of Hammerwichs players scoring 98. However Elford undeterred by the large total set about reaching it quickly scoring 95 with in 15 overs ! Rob Wright led the way with 29 before Gaz Allen back off holiday (and raring to go) top scored with 107 Not Out. Allen's innings included 15 Fours and only 2 Six's ! Eric Dodd supported Allen well scoring 23 Not out. Elford reached the total for the loss of 5 wickets with in 33 overs, which was probably for the best as it was already dark when they finished. A great victory for a young Elford side over the Division champions on a Sunday.

Elford 1sts Vs Kings Bromley 1sts | BDCL Div 2 - 28 th August 1999

A depleted Elford First XI played host to relegation threatened Kings Bromley on a glorious August afternoon. With more than 10 regular players absent through a combination of holiday, work and a separate club tour in Suffolk Elford were left scratching around to field 2 sides this weekend. After losing the toss and being put into bat Elford lost the early wicket of newcomer Malcolm Prince in only his second game in 5 years. However the combination of Brian Found (51) and Gaz Allen (42) (including 5 fours and 2 sixes), led Elford from 17 – 1 to 110 – 2. A middle order collapse insured as the next 4 batsman managed 22 runs between them. Youngster James Paulson smashed a quickfire 23 before being eventually caught and bowled. Although the runs were still flowing the wickets were also falling at an alarming rate, leaving Elford to bat out 10 overs with only 3 wickets remaining. Once again it was left to Danny Haines (13*) and Steve Gould (4*) to bat the overs out and put on runs. By the end the pair had put on 40 between them to lead Elford to 195 –9 off 45 overs.

Elford got off to a flyer as Danny Haines dismissed Ptobomey in the first over while an excellent individual piece of fielding from James Paulson dismissed the Bromley danger man Fanshawe. A recovery followed as Kings Bromley edged towards the total and at one stage looked as if they could take the points before spin of Steve Gould took 4 wickets for a mere 11 runs in 2 overs. Kings Bromley finally finished on 148 – 9 off 45 overs leaving Elford with their 2 consecutive 9-3 victory. A brilliant result for a side with out so many regular players.

Hammerwich 2nds Vs Elford 2nds | BDCL Div 3

Like the Firsts, Elford Second XI was lacking many of the regulars, which have carried the side this year. However the 2nds didn't fare so well against promotion hopeful's Hammerwich who sent Elford to a 93 run defeat. Batting first Hammerwich smashed their way to 240 – 6 off their 45 overs. Youngster Tom Riley 30 –1 was the pick of the Elford bowlers. In reply John Ross 43 (making amends after dropping no fewer than 4 catches) and James Found 41 led the Elford run chase. However it was to no avail despite a spree from Steve Found and Ant Wright at the end, as Elford slumped to 147 –9 to claim a solitary point in their struggle against relegation.

Belvedere Park 2nds Vs Elford 1sts | BDCL Div 2 - 4 th Sept 1999

Elford's winning streak finally came to an end with a 10 run defeat at promotion hopeful's Belvedere Park. After choosing to bat on a glorious September afternoon, Belvedere made the best of a superb batting wicket as they eased themselves to 266 – 2 off 45 overs despite the tight bowling of many of the Elford bowlers.

In reply Elford got off to a steady start before Danny Haines was bowled for 6. However the ever in form Gaz Allen (43) and opener Brian Found (58) guided Elford to 118 before Allen was caught. Elford subsequently lost themselves in the middle of the order, despite youngster Alex Gray scoring a well-earned 26 as many of his batting partners came and went. It set up a very close finish as James Boden smashed his way to 46 not out (although he did run out Rob Drabble who was looking dangerous with the bat). However Elford couldn't quite reach the total and fell 10 runs short finishing on 255 –9 to claim 4 bonus points.

Elford 2nds Vs Whittington | BDCL Div 2

Elford 2nds who desperately needed a win to ease themselves away from the relegation zone played host to division 3 title contenders Whittington. Batting first Elford struggled to contain the Whittington attack as former Elford player Adam Heale took 5 –10 off 12 overs. Skipper Dave Riley top scored with 16 before being run out on the last ball off the innings. Earlier Steve Found had done well to cope with opening bowlers despite only scoring 9. Elford finally finished on 86 all out.

In reply Elford produced the bowling performance off the year to bowl local rivals Whittington out for only 60 runs! Youngster Ant Wright took 3 – 13 while Steve Found returned to his former bowling days to take match-winning figures off 4 –10. Matt Perry (back off tour) rapped up the innings taking 2 for 1 run in 1.3 overs.

Elford 1sts Vs Burton 2nds | BDCL Div 2 -11 Sept 1999

Elford crashed to a 12 –0 defeat at the hands of title chasers Burton. With many absences through holiday and other sporting commitments Elford found themselves short of batsman which Burton took full advantage of. After winning the toss the early signs were good as openers Ben Hughes and Danny Haines got the score racing before Haines was caught one handed in the slips (for the 5 th time this year !). Leading run scorer Gaz Allen fell to his second duck of the season being bowled first ball. Matt Perry managed to survive the hatrick before being bowled a couple balls later. James Boden (17) and Ben Hughes (14) offered more resistance than the rest of the middle order before both players were bowled in quick succession. A quick fire 18 from Rob Drabble lifted the innings, which also included a six which was sent straight through a car headlamp! Elford's sorry innings however collapsed at 67 all out as Burton 1 st team bowlers took 5 wickets a piece.

Elfords pitifully low scored was reached easily as the Burton openers never looked in trouble. The only sniff of a wicket was a drop catch from stand in keeper Gaz Allen from the bowling of Danny Haines. A disappointing result to a side far more determined on winning on the day than Elford.

Ashby Town Vs Elford 2nds | BDCL Div 3

The seconds however had a far brighter day as they beat Ashby by 6 wickets to secure a place in division 3 for next year. Batting first Ashby slipped to 26 –4 before steering the innings to 133 all out as Tim Whitehouse 3 – 10 and Ant Wright 3 –25 did the damage. The Elford innings was led by the veteran partnership of John Ross (who scored an unbeaten 41 in 37 overs!), and Eric Dodd 18. Elford therefore took home 10 valuable points to steer the to safety and life in division 3 for next season.

Centre Set Vs Elford 1sts | BDCL Div 2 - 18 Sept 1999

Elford finished the season in the same way they started with an 11-1 defeat. Runaway Division 2 title winners Centre Set eased to 100 run victory over a tired looking Elford side. To make matters worse Elford could only manage 10 players in all to familiar end of a season situation. Batting first Centre Set struggled against the seem bowling of Ben Hughes and Danny Haines as the home side were reduced to 27 –3. However the combination of A Jones (116) and T West (84) led the division winners to score well in excess of 250. Although Elford did manage to make some later in roads through the steady bowling of Gaz Allen 2 –37 and leading wicket taker Rob Drabble 3 –66.

Chasing 280 to win Elford were always going to struggle with only 10 men. Although even Elford couldn't believe their own lack batting application as they crashed to 16 – 4. Spirits were lifted through (veteran!) Dave Ling 49 and Matt Perry who finished on an unbeaten 70. Youngster Steve Gould also piled up his top score of the season finishing on 30. Elford finally finished on 180 –9. A disappointing end to the season which had promised so much more on the field.

Elford 2nds Vs Coppice Unity | BDCL Div 3

The second also lost their last game of the year to local rivals Coppice Unity. Batting first Coppice led through T Long (42) scored 188 – 8 off 45 overs. Tim Whitehouse 3 –16 and young spin bowler Tom Riley 2 –29 led the Elford attack in which all 11 players were used to bowl! In a reversed batting order Elford got off to a good start led by Eric Dodd who scored his highest total of year finishing on 67. Tim Whitehouse 28 and Skipper Dave Riley 26 led the tail as Elford stumbled to 156 all out. T Long starred with the ball for Coppice as he took 4 –14.

REPORT OF ANNUAL END OF YEAR 6 a SIDE – 26 Sept 1999

Elford CC ended the season on a high as they swept a side Lullington Park to lift the annual end of year 6 a side sponsored by Aston Science Park and Stubby Leas Resthome . The trophy finally returns back to Elford after at least a 15-year absence.

The hosts, Elford (fielding 2 sides) were amongst 8 other local teams which included Derbyshire outfit Lullington Park , North Warwickshire CC , Aston OE (who unfortunately dropped out) and Burton league sides Hopwas, Wilnecote and Whittington . Elford reached the final after easing to victory over local league rivals Wilnecote and Elford B who had reached the semi finals through a bye. Lullington also played well to push a side a strong combination of Whittington and last years finalists North Warwick. However Lullington slipped up with the bat as Elford fielded and bowled very well to keep the holders down to a mere 30 off 5 overs. Elford eased to victory with an over and half to spare with all their wickets intact to claim a well-deserved victory. The Elford side included Skipper Ben Hughes, Danny Haines, Gaz Allen, Matt Perry, Rob and Ant Wright.
