Match Reports 2010

Nuneaton 4ths Vs Elford 2nds
Warwickshire Div 5a
Won by 6 wkts

Elford travelled away to Nuneaton for their final game of the season. The home team won the toss and elected to bat first. Their innings began slowly and Sam Griffiths picked up 2 quick wickets and was unlucky not to have a third when he overstepped. Loz Williams also picked up another wicket for Elford and the home side were struggling, Loz was also denied a great caught and bowled thanks to another no ball. Match fixing maybe?? Nuneaton's middle order stuck in and the rain came down twice and disrupted the innings and made pace bowling impossible with soggy run ups. Stefan Hollingsworth bowled brilliantly and was unlucky not to have a wicket as he ended with figures of 0-36 off his 15 overs, helped by Roshan Barnes, between them the pair bowled 27 overs and only conceded 76 runs between them at just under 3 runs an over. As Nuneaton looked to push the total Sam Griffiths came back and picked up 3 wickets in his last over to end with figures of 5-25 off 9 overs, as Elford restricted Nuneaton to 156-6 from their 50 overs. The rain interruptions meant that Elford had only 35 over to chase the total of 157.

Tom Marshall and Chris Griffiths made a steady start scoring 38 before Chris was bowled for 17. Sam Griffiths came in and scored at quicker than a run a ball but was bowled on 17, before Steff Hollingsworth also scored at just under a run a ball to get Elford back on track before he was triggered leg before on 24. Needing just over 5 an over James Hallett and Tom Marshall ran brilliantly between the wickets and along with a couple of timely boundaries from James Hallett pushed Elford closer to the score as Tom Marshall passed 50 for his first half century for the club. When Hallett fell for 20 Elford needed 3 off 10 balls, and heroically Tommy Griffiths came in and saw out 3 wide balls as Elford cruised to victory with wickets in hand. The victory was made even sweater as Elford only had 9 men. Also Tom Marshall's 50 was a match winning knock and his application at the crease was impecible as he looked fully in control of the run chase from ball 1.

Rugeley Sun XI Vs Elford Sun XI
Lichfield League Div 4
Lost by 4 wkts

Elf 225-8
Rug 226-6

Elford’s rollercoaster season continued as they travelled to Rugeley on their final game of the season. Needing a large margin of victory to guarantee promotion, Elford once again decided to bat first, albeit with a careful eye on a wet track. The father and son combination of Chris and Sam Griffiths once again helped set the tone of the innings as the pair put on 81 for the 1st wicket. Sam Griffiths fell two short of Half Century, but his innings helped create the platform for others to follow. Chris Griffiths eventually fell for 38, while Stef Hollingsworth batted well for 35.  Helped by over 49 extras and several cameos further down the order, Elford set a competitive 225-8 off 40 overs.

Rugeley got off to a good start, easily outscoring the runrate, until Tony Allen started to swing the ball. He took the first two wickets to help stem the flow of runs. The introduction of Stef Hollingsworth also helped slow things down as he managed to extract a little turn in the picth. Unlike previous weeks, Elford also held some difficult catches to keep the pressure on. Unfortunately without several regular bowlers, Elford started to lose the grip on the game as Rugeley started to home in the victory. Danny Haines came back on two take 2 quick late wickets to garb another point, but Rugeley crossed the line with 3 overs and 4 wickets to spare.  Despite a disappointing finish, Elford learnt that they had been promoted by 1 point as Tamworth beat Wishaw by a slightly larger margin. A great end to the season on a Sunday, made even better by the fact that the Saturday side had been relegated the day before!

Aston Vs Elford
Warwickshire Div 5
Elford Lost by 134 runs

Ast 231-8
Elf 97ao

With Both 1st and 2nd teams struggling for numbers Elford travelled to Aston with just 9 players. Having lost the toss, Elford were asked to field first as Aston exploited every gap in the field to race to 65-1 before the rainstorms caused a long delay in proceedings. Having taken an early Tea and reduced the match to 87 overs, Elford started brightly with Paul Baldwin getting the best out of the slippery conditions. He took 3 – 61 in 3 spells, while the evergreen Lenny Allsopp was the other star with the ball claiming 4 -27off 7. Helped by 2 catches and  2 stumping by Paul Jones behind the wickets the pair helped by peg the homeside down. Jones exploits were remarkable given the fact that he broke his hand during the game, but played on, only find the day after in A&E!

Elford downfall as always was their batting which despite their best efforts fell well short of the target. Paul Jones top scored with a solid 33 before being run out attempting a second, while skipper Tony Allen had looked equally impressive before being caught for 19. Elford’s innings soon ebbed away and with only 9 men was all over in the 28th over for 97.

Elford Sun XI Vs Hawkins 1sts
Lichfield League Div 4
Won by 32 runs

Elf 184-8
Haw 152-7

Elford entertained the unbeaten division champions on a warm afternoon at Elford. The visitors were 30 mins late arriving, so Elford claimed the toss and 5 overs and batted first on a low bouncing track. Father and son Chris and Sam Griffiths got Elford off to a solid sbut slow start before Chris was bowled with the score on 43-1 off 15. His dismissal promoted a mini collapse as Elford lost 2 more quick wickets before Malc MacDonald and his Mongoose entered the arena. MacDonald scored a quick fire 34, ten of which came in his first two shots! Simon Godsmark was equally as bullish hitting 30 off as many balls. Sam Griffiths who had held the innings together at the other end eventually was caught and bowled for 57 which allowed a late flurry of runs from the tail Ian Redgatre was left unbeaten on 20 as Elford posted 184-8.

Hawkins looked dangerous early on but after the openers were dismissed they struggled to maintain the run chase. Wickets were shared amongst all the bowlers with Allsopp and Hollingsworth slow bowling picking up 2 wickets  apiece, while Haines and MacDoanld bowled tightly for a wicket each respectively. Hawkins eventually fell 32 runs short in a close and well tempered game.

Elford Vs Coventry Uni
Warwickshire Div 5
Lost by 197 runs
Cov 280ao
Elf 87ao

Elford lack of batting power was once again the cause of their shortcomings against high flying Coventry Uni & RM . The visitors had been asked to bat first and quickly found life difficult as they were unable to play the swing bowling from Haines. Unfortunately several dropped catches off the bowler meant that Cov Uni were able to capitalise and build an innings. Ian Redgate in his first bowl for the 1sts caused some unrest, as his lack of pace caught the batsman in two minds. He picked up 2-55 from 9 including and sharp caught and bowled. With Cov Uni starting to look in trouble at 132-5 off 25, the visitors swung from the hip. The game turned into a lottery as some balls missed the pegs by less than an inch while some disappeared into neighbouring fields. The expression cow corner was never more appropriate! Paul Baldwin maintained his good start by coming back onto bowl to snaffle a very tidy 6-50 off 15 considering the shots being played. After several more agriculture shots Cov Uni were bowled out for 280.

With a barely a recognised batsman in the site, Elford task was made even more difficult as they lost several early wickets. Only Paul Jones (23) offered any major resistance as Elford were bowled out for just a mere 83.

Newbold 2nds Vs Elford 2nds
Warwickshire Div 5a
Won by 24 runs

New 156ao
Elf 180ao

Elford travelled to their nearest league rivals with only 10 men and were asked to bat first on a wet track. Openers Tom Marshall and Chris Griffiths got Elford off to the perfect start before Griffiths fell foul off any injury and hit out on 25, 2 runs short of a 50 partnership from 20 overs. Marshall fell shortly after for 15. The Griffiths Brothers Tommy and Sam pushed the score to 89 before both falling on 17 and 18 respectively. Stef Hollinsworth played the spinners well and added 20. However, when he fell at the score standing at 117 for 5 it was left to debutant James, and David Easthope (23) to help push the score to 158. James batted with the tail and was the last wicket out for 17, with Elford scoring a respectable 180 off 48 overs.

The Newbold reply started strongly and within no time had put 30 runs on the board.  The game changed though when Paul Nott took two wickets in two balls, with catches from the Griffiths brothers. Elford tightened up in the field and Paul Nott took a third as Elford started to add the pressure. Drabble chipped in with 3-39, and with the opposition 100 for 7 a win looked on the cards. Steff Hollinsworth bowled superbly and picked up the danger wicket with figures off 1-18 off 8 overs. Sam Griffiths took his second wicket and ended with 2-51, but after a nervous last wicket partnership Paul Nott come back on and picked up his 4th wicket to finish with 4-44 off 7 overs. A much overdue victory and only Elford 2nd's first away win since 2nd August 2008. The result now leaves them just one win victory away from Newbold in the league.

Elford vs Wishaw / Four Oaks 2nds
Lichfield Div 4
Won by 6 runs

Elf 181-9
Wis 175-6

Elford Sun returned to winning ways with a close victory over 2nd placed Wishaw. Having batted first, Elford reached 181-9 off 40 overs thanks mainly two the cameo performances by Sam Griffiths 49 and the inform Ian Redgate 45. Opener Griffiths had helped set the innings while Redgate batting at 7 helped make sure the tail wagged, building a recovery from 98-5.

Elford almost got off to the best possible start as Haines found the outside edge only to see another catch slip. Unfortunately it was another relatively poor day in the field as another 4 catches went down in this game. Haines found the outside edge again in the 16th over to make the breakthrough after Wishaw had started brightly. Wishaw had look poised at the Drinks break (78-1), but the introduction on the inform Paul Baldwin changed the game. He continued his fine form this weekend, exploiting the best out of the track to take 3-15 off 8. Stand in skipper Tony Allen chipped in with another wicket leaving the game very delicately poised. Wishaw kept in with a sniff until they lost their 6th wicket as Sam Griffiths knocked a peg over. Needing 16 off the last over to win, Wishaw were left 6 short in close match.

Coventry Dunlop Vs Elford

Dun 259-7
Elf 152ao

Videos at: http://www.youtube.com/user/elfordcricketclub

Elfords relegation fight took another turn for the worse as they were comfortably beaten by promotion hopefuls Coventry Dunlop. Having lost the toss, the homeside elected to bat first on a good hard looking wicket. The Dunlop openers didn’t like the bounce from Haines as he quickly bagged an early wicket. Dunlops top order looked a little calmer from they pervious meeting as they dug in and built an innings. Haines found the outside edge once again to put Dunlop 2 down before the introduction of Lenny Allsop made the real impression. Despite some hefty hitting, Allsop’s nagging length and pace was just want Elford needed as he took 4 -53 off 13. Unfortunately the other Elford bowlers couldn’t contain the Dunlop batsman he started hitting out towards the end, too help the declare on 259-7 off 44overs.

Dunlops declaration meant that Elford had 56 overs to chase down the total, a cause which looked good initially. A ever increasingly frustrated Dunlop were left a little bemused as Elford looked set on 55-0 off 14. Unfortunately, the story of Elfords recent season set in as they collapsed in familiar fashion. Skipper Tony Allen top scored with 31, but his dismissal sparked the implode as Elford crashed to 93-5. Ant Wright back in Elford colours chipped in with 22, while Lenny Allsop helped the tail wag with 18, but it was too little to late. Elford were finally bowled out for 152 in the 43rd over.

Elford 2nds Vs Coventry Dunlop 2nds
Warwickshire Div 5a
Losing Draw

Dun 207-8
Elf 177-8

Elford welcomed an in-form Coventry Dunlop on an overcast afternoon. Captain, Sam Griffiths decided a change of tactics was in order and won the toss and elected to bowl first. Elford made a brilliant start restricting Dunlop to 43-4 after 18 overs, with Drabble in fine form picking up 3-42, while Matt Topham chipped in with another well planned wicket. Tommy Griffiths came into the attack and took a wicket in his first over to leave Dunlop teetering on 45-5. Dunlop’s middle order rebuilt and the runs started accumulating before Tom Marshall broke the partnership at 160-6. Paul Nott fell foul of a nasty fielding accident and only managed 1 over before going off the field. Sam Griffiths and Matt Topham bowled at the death both picking up one wicket each, Topham ending with figures of 2-43. Dunlop ended on 207 for 8 off their 50 overs.

The Elford Innings got off to a usual pattern with Barnes going for 1 in the 4th Over. Chris Griffiths and Paul Jones however gradually began to build a partnership and by drinks had got the innings back on track with the target still in sight. Chris Griffiths was caught sharply in slip for his season best score of 44 off 90 balls, ending the partnership on 96, with posied on Elford 105-2 off 32 overs needing 102 to win off 18. The target soon looked a long shot when in form Sam Griffiths was out for a 4th ball duck and Matt Topham was dismissed for just 6 leaving Elford 130 for 4 needing 78 to win from 13 overs. However Paul Jones continued to bat confidently, passing his 50. Jones holed out on 65 in 40th over leaving the game very much in the balance. Simon Godsmark and Harvey Bowstead pushed the total to 158 off 44 and needing only 50 off 6 overs leaving the target just in reach. However 2 quick wickets in the 46th and 47th overs made Elford chances even slimmer. Rob Drabble chopped on after facing only 3 balls and with only 2 wickets, Elford were soon in danger of folding. With the injured Paul Nott at 11, it was left to Tommy Griffiths and Tom Marshall to bat sensibly seeing off the final overs, pushing the score onto 177-8, helping Elford 10 valuable points in the fight against relegation.

Elford Vs Milford Hall
Lichfield League Div 4
Lost by 7 wkts

Elf 152ao
MH 153-3

Elfords recent Sunday form came to an end as they lost their first game in five at home to a young Milford side. Elfords started brightly enough thanks to the father and son combination of Chris (28) & Sam Griffiths (23). However their departure triggered the collapse as Elford slumped to 78-5. The tail did wag thanks to some mini cameos, natbleby from Simon Godsmark 18 and Paul Baldwin 16, but Elford were bowled out for a below par 152.

Milford made short work of chasing the total losing just 3 wickets, before reaching the total in the 28th over. Lenny Allsop was the pick of the bowling attack taking 2-33 off 8 as well as scooping a very quick catch at slip.

The Scottish Pro and his pet goose...

Videos at: http://www.youtube.com/user/elfordcricketclub

Elford came within a wicket of victory over local rivals Wilnecote in a close encounter at Brickhouse Lane. Having won the toss yet again this season, Captain Tony Allen elected to bat first in search for maximum points. Elfords innings started very slowly as the visitors restricted Elford to 27 – 3 of 12 overs, with 20 of those coming from Tony Allen. However the introduction of Malc MacDonald and his mongoose cricket bat soon increased the scoring rate. MacDonald opened his account with a six off his first ball followed by 2 fours. He eventually holed out at long on for 25, but his innings helped Elford find their momentum once again. Sam Leech looked like he’d never been away top scoring with 46 including some lovely straight hitting in what will unfortunately be a cameo before Australia beckons again. Danny ‘wooden leg’ Hackett looked set, only to be trapped LBW for the fifth time this season on 21. Elford began to wobble dramatically and despite some lefty blows from Ian Redgate were looking in trouble at 164-9. However Danny Haines (16*) and Ian Redgate (42) put on 32 for the last wicket to see Elford with in 4 runs of maximum batting points.

Wilnecotes run chase was going according to plan despite 2 early wickets falling, one due to a brilliant pit of fielding from a runout by Malc MacDonald. At the drinks break at 25 overs, Wilnecote looked poised on 94-2. The introduction of Tony Allen and Lenny Allsop to the attack brought about a swift change in fortunes as Wilnecote started to wobble. Ryan Mckenna looked in good touch only to be caught on the boundary for 40, as his wicket started a mini collapse. Tony Allens  gentle medium pace swing deliveries helped pick up his first ever 5 wicket haul, with 5-39 off 15 while Allop took 2 -19 off 5. Elford brought back on the openers to keep the run rate down as Wilnecote still sniffed victory despite wickets tumbling. The visitors eventually shut up shop with 3 overs to go, as Elford desperately searched for the elusive last wicket to no avail.

Leamington Khalsa 2nds Vs Elford 2nds
Warwickshire Div 5a
Lost by 8 wickets
Elf 88ao
LK89-2

Elford had a long away trip to Leamington Khalsa but were had high spirits despite fielding 2 under 15's in a weakened team. Elford won the toss and elected to bat first but were soon in familiar territory as their poor form with the bat continued. Elford lost the first 4 wickets within 12 overs, thanks to a mixture of good bowling and poor batting. Sam Griffiths steadied the innings with a mixture of aggressive and cautious batting, accompanied by Tom Marshall. The pair look to rebuild until skipper Sam Griffiths was removed for 32 in similar fashion to the previous week. The tail soon collapsed and Tom Marshall was left stranded 9 not out from over 40 deliveries.

Leamington Khalsa's openers were in a destructive mood, setting about the low target quickly. There was a small glimmer of hope when Topham got the 1st wicket thanks to a good catch from Sam Griffiths. Rob Drabble picked up another wicket thanks to smart catch from Marshall, but Khalsa ran out comfortable victors by 8 wickets.

Elford Vs Centre Set
Lichfield Cricket League Div 4
Won by 44 runs
Elf 215-8
CS 177-9

Elfords impressive Sunday form continued as they won their third consecutive game to keep them in the promotion hunt. Having batted first to notch up 215-8, thanks mainly to skipper Danny Hackett 63 and Sam Griffiths 28, Elford were in destructive mood with the ball. Centre Sets reply got off to the worst possible start after being reduced to 20-5, as Lenny Allosp 3-10 and Tony Allen 2-14 ripped out the top order. Centre Set did recover, but never looked in danger of reaching the total, finishing on 177-9.

Newdigate 1sts Vs Elford 1sts
Warwickshire Div 5
Lost by 120 runs
New 294-4
Elf 174ao

Elford crashed to a third successive defeat leaving them with an up hill struggle to stop in the division. Having travelled to fellow strugglers Newdigate, Elford elected to field first in the warm afternoon sunshine. Their decision was soon rewarded as Danny Haines (2-53 off 12) picked up the first couple of wickets with the help of Danny Hackett behind the stumps. Captain Tony Allen bowled tidily at the other end and also managed to find the keepers gloves with an edge behind. Despite runs coming feely of the bat on a very quick outfield, the game was poised at 73-3 off 18 overs. Unfortunately, Elfords fielding began to wilt in the sunshine and several dropped catches and pieces of misfortune conspired to work against the visitors. Newdigate seized the initiative to maximise the holes in the field, scoring an impressive 294-4 off 50 overs.  Elfords reply started brightly enough as Malc MacDoanld opened with a breezy 19. However, the familiar pattern of Elfords innings this season set in, as they crumbled from 30-1 to 63-6 within 10 overs. Simon Smith showed his class with the bat as he top scored with a well earned 69, before being caught out by the pitch. Supported by a gritty 28 from Ian Redgate, the pair saw Elford gain a couple of batting points before folding on 174ao.

Elford 2nds Vs Collycroft 2nds
Warwickshire Div 5a
Lost by 2 wkts
Elf 100
Col 101-8

Elford won the toss and chose to bat first on what was a very hot a humid day. Elford's top order made a very poor start losing 2 wickets in the 3rd over, the Griffiths farther and son combination steadied the ship, before Chris Griffiths was bowled for 12, followed immediately by the wicket of Matt Topham on his 2nd ball. Sam Griffiths and Julian Davies got Elford up to 60 however after the wicket of Sam Griffiths for 32 Elford fell to 100 All Out from 27 overs on what can only be described as a terribley low wicket.

Collycrofts response started slowly and Drabble rattled 3 early wickets to put the pressure on at 44-3, Sinclair however batted well for 48, however when his wicket fell Collycroft looked extremely nervous and wickets began to fall, with Drabble picking up 6 for 28 off 12 overs, Matt Topham chipped in with 2 wickets, but Collycroft stubbled over the line with 2 wickets to spare despite a thrilling finish which saw Elford bowl 5 overs for just 9 runs and took 3 wickets.

Guildfordians 2nds Vs Elford Sun XI
Lichfield League Div 4
Won by 39 runs
Elf 289
Gui 250

Despite Elfords poor form with a bat on a Saturday, the same players seem to be brimming with confidence on a Sunday, as they amassed 289 of 37 overs. Steph Hollingsworth put his Saturday form behind him and top scored with 64 showing his potential with the bat. There were also notable contributions from Malc MacDonald 37 (using a mongoose bat!), Captain Danny Hackett 33 and Sam Leech 31. Combined with several other little cameos and nearly 50 extras, Elford scored a season best 289. Guildfordians made Elford work for their victory as they got close to the total without quite threatening to reach it. Paul Baldwin was the pick of the bowlers with 3-27 off 8 while the other wickets were shared amongst the rest of the attack. Leon Williams 96 got Guildfordians close , but fell 39 runs short on 250ao.

Elford Vs Stockingford
Warwickshire Div 5
Lost by 103 runs
Sto261-6
Elf 158ao

Elford fell 8 balls short of a losing draw in a closer game than the scores would suggest. Having asked the visitors to bat first, Stockingford made a good start reaching 103-0 after the drinks break helped by a couple of dropped catches. A change in bowling brought about a change in fortunes as skipper Tony Allen (2-50) quickly dismissed the openers, both caught being within an over of each other. Lenny Allsop (2-57) tweaked the ball and was once again soon amongst the wickets. Stockingford used the wickets in hand to allow the middle order to play their shots to some good fortune reaching 261-6 off 50.
Despite every batsman making a start and looking set, Elford couldn’t quite make a substantial partnership last. Several LBW decisions did little help, on a frustrating afternoon. Ian Redgate top scored with a well earnt 32, while ‘High Ho’ MacDonald (24) disturbed the adjunct cornfield several times! Elford eventually fell 8 agonising balls short of what had seemed a probable draw.

Elford Sun XI vs Tamworth 2nds Sun XI
Lichfield Div 4
Won by 122 runs
Elf 246-5
Tam 124a0

Elford Sun XI cruised to a comfortable 122 run victory of local neighbours Tamworth 2nds.  Having batted first, Elford made hay in the sunshine as several batsman found their form. Sam Griffiths fell 6 short of his half century while skipper Danny Hackett went even closer hitting an unbeaten 98 off 81. Sam Leech fresh back from Australia scored 29 on his return while Steph Hollingsworch chipped in with 25 to leave Elford on 246-5 off 40 overs. Tamworths innings never really got started with most batsman failing to reach double figures. T Rainsford hit 30, while extras accounted for next highest score with 25. Jack Leech also back from down under was the pick of the bowlers with 4-34 off 6 helped by Hollingsworth with 2 wickets. Tamworth were eventually dismissed for 124.

Thimblemill Vs Elford
Warwickshire Div 5
Lost by 2 wkts

Elf 78ao
Thi 81-8

Elford reached the half way mark of the season by sinking to new lows as they managed to press the self destruct button. Having elected to bat first, Elford got off to a solid enough start thanks to Sam Griffiths 27 and Paul Baldwin 13. However in the space of 15 overs Elford collapsed from 41-1 to 78 ao. The less the said the better, but the dismissals even included a timed out!

With little left to lose, Elford decided to deploy an attacking field and bowl as full and straight as possible. They were soon rewarded as the openers were soon amongst the wickets. Danny Haines and Paul Baldwin helped reduce the home team to 9-4 before Thimblemills middle order swung from the hip to leave the score delicately balanced at 39-4 at Tea. After the restart, Wickets and Boundaries fell at regular intervals as Haines & Baldwin continued to keep Elford in the hunt. At 68-8, both sides smelt victory, but Thimblemill managed to hold on to the win with a boundary to finish the game. Haines finished with 4 – 40 off 12 while Baldwin ended with 4 – 41 off 11.5.

Elford 2nds Vs Nuneaton 4ths
Winning Draw

On a hot and sunny day Elford lost the toss and were put into bat by Nuneaton on a pitch with plenty of pace and bounce. Stand in Skipper Chris Griffiths and opener Roshan Barnes got off to a wonderful start and made a partnership of 58 off 17 over before sadly they both fell in the space of 2 of overs, Chris Griffiths with 23 and Barnes continuing his good form with 28. The middle order took to the slower bowlers and scored runs at over 5 an over for a period of almost 25 overs with Martin Turkington making a magnificent 53 his first 50 for the club and Simon Godsmark showing his new found confidence making 37 including a 6 first ball. The lower order all chipped in but wickets fell as the overs ran out and Elford ended on 228 - 8 and earned full batting bonus points and looking strong for victory.

With and under strength bowling attack Rob Drabble bowled brilliantly at a run rate of less than 1 and over and ended his spell of 2 for 14, whilst the ever enthusiastic Julian Davies Bowled until he could hardly stand and also took 2 wickets, after 30 over Nuneaton were steady at 118 for 4, before a spell of fast and hostile bowling from youngster Tommy Griffiths saw another 2 wickets fall for impressive figures of 2 for 17 off his maximum 6 overs. The game looked destined for a draw but catches from the two openers Griffiths and Barnes left Nuneaton needing to bat out the last over with just 1 wicket remaining. Sadly Elford were unable to take the last wicket despite a full hearted last over from Skipper Chris Griffiths, however Elford were extremely happy to pick up 18 points in a winning draw which see's them move above their rivals Nuneaton in the table.

A special mention for Martin Turkington on achieving his first well deserved 50 for Elford and his highest career score.

Elford 1sts Vs Walmley 3rds
Warwickshire Div 5
Losing Draw
Wal 304-8
Elf 188-3

Elford and Walmley had to settle for a draw on a cool and blustery day at Brickhouse Lane.  Having asked the visitors to bat first, Walmley amassed an impressive 304-8 thanks mainly to a notable century from I Griffiths. Danny Haines (2 - 45 off10) was back amongst the wickets, helping too make early in roads into the top order, while Lenny Allsop ‘bought’ 3 wickets for 85 lower down the innings. There was also a wicket a piece for skipper Tony Allen and Paul Baldwin. However, a some what sloppy performance in field allowed the visitors to score several more runs than Elford would have liked.
Elfords reply was steady and slow as they looked to put the bad ball away without playing to many loose shots. This was an art which Paul Baldwin took to heart as he produced one of the more astonishing innings witnessed at the club. For the second week running he carried his bat, although this was made more remarkable for the fact that he scored just 11 runs (including 2 fours) of 131 balls! He dropped anchor while Paul Jones 29 and Danny Hackett 71* opened their arms. Hackett in particular played well, hitting long and straight to a somewhat frustrated and bemused opposition. The game petered out to a draw long before the 50th over, by which time Elford had amassed 188-3 and share of the points.

Wal 141-5

Having won the toss and electing to bat first, Elfords innings got off to a slow start as Chris Griffiths and Tom Marshall saw off the first 15 overs. However the wickets soon started to tumble and Elford soon found themselves 52-5. The fight back began with Simon Godsmark who batted excellently for 58 (his first 50 for Elford), Paul Nott and Harvey Bowstead again batted sensibly to see out the overs, Tommy Griffiths and Jules Davies hit a couple of boundaries but Elford ended 136 all out.

Walmley started nervously as ‘veteran’ Rob Drabble took 2 wickets in the first 10 Overs. Elford continued to toil and when Simon Godsmark took a good catch, followed up with an impressive run out, the home team were looking shaky at 90-5. Walmleys young middle order played aggressively and soon chased down the score for a comfortable and deserved victory, despite a brave performance by Elford.
A special mention that the game was played in a brilliant spirit and both teams enjoyed their game. Also congratulation to Simon Godsmark for his first Elford 50.

Hunningham Vs Elford
Warwickshire Cricket League 5
Lost by 235 runs

Hun 315-4
Elf 80

Elfords unbeaten run came to a crashing end as an under strength 1st team was comprehensively beaten away at league leaders Hunningham. Having turned up in dribs and drabs following a long journey for an early start, Elford were asked to field first. It was Captain Tony Allens day with the ball as he easily was the most effective bowler on a slow pitch. His gentle swing bowling was perfect for the conditions as he took 4 -55 off 15 overs. In fact he took the only wickets of the home sides innings, as Hunningham recovered from 78-4 to 315-4! On a bad day in the field, Elford were punished for a sloppy display as they wiltered away in the summer sun.  Their performance with the bat was equally as abject as the top order capitulated. Elfords innings never got started and the less said about it the better. Paul Badlwin carried his bat for 27* as he showed a determined and gritty display, but even with a slight rearguard from the tail, Hunningham had plenty of overs to wrap up proceedings. Elford finally succumbed to the inevitable in the 33rd over for just 80, but at least had enough time to get home for the football!

Elford 2nds Vs Bulkington 2nds
Warwickshire Cricket League 5a
Lost by 3 wkts

Elf 190-9
Bul 191-7

After losing the toss and being asked to bat elford got off to a poor start and were 20-3 from 7 overs, however a 50 partnership between S.Griffiths and M.Topham helped elfordget past 50 before S.Griffiths(28) was bowled. Topham continued to bat well and made a further 40 partnership with Barnes(20), Topham eventually got out caught on the boundary on 43. The lower order stuck in with Paul Nott and Harvey batting well. It was the last wicket partnership however who batted brilliantly to get Elford to 190-9 with Tommy .Griffiths getting 39 not out off 30 balls. On his home debut 14 year old G.Harrison ended not out and bravely survived.

The Bulkington innings got off to a solid start with the openers making 50, however a stunning catch from S.Griffiths off Topham's bowling broke the partnership. Wickets fell at regular interval's but needing under 4 an over bulkington stayed with the rate, Sam Griffiths ended with 3-33 off 15 over while Topham also chipped in with 2 wickets. Stu Edgar bowled very well at the end helped by an impressive feilding display. However, Bulkington kept their nerve and hit the winning runs with just 3 balls remaining.

Wishaw 2nds vs Elford
Lichfield District League Div 4
Elf 210-6
Rained off

Elford were left frustrated by the rain as a heavy downpour and thundery conditions put pay to any chance of a result. Having Batted first, Elford had notched up 210-6 thanks mainly to Paul Jones who a hit a terrific 103* to carry his bat. Other notable knocks came from Danny Hackett 30 and Malc MacDonald 29. However the heavy rain came at Tea and washed out any chance of further play.

Elford 1sts Vs Aston 1sts
Warwickshire Div 5
Won by 8 wkts

Ast 127ao
Elf 130-2

Elford finally broke their long run without a victory as they comfortably turned over third placed Aston. Without a win a last season, and an indifferent start this season, Elford certainly wouldn’t have started as pre match favourites against an inform Aston. Skipper Allen decided to stick the same game plan as previous weeks and bowl first to the delights of his players in the June sunshine. However, he was quickly rewarded as Danny Haines (2-20) snatched a couple of early wickets to open up the middle order. It was Allen (3-28) himself who then provided the cutting edge with the ball as his gentle outswingers were far to much for the Aston batsman. In the space of 5 overs he managed to take 3 wickets including a sharp caught and bowled. Aston could have been in even more trouble when a close stumping went the way of opposition. It proved decisive for Aston as the player went onto score almost half of Astons total. Lenny Allsop, who returned to the side in over a 10 year absence provided the spark to turn the screw on the visitors. Allsop took 3 – 32 while Paul Baldwin mopped up the tail to take a deserved 2 – 39, as Aston collapsed from 103-5 to 127ao.

Despite the modest total, Elfords batting as often been their undoing. It was the first over of the innings which decisively swung the game to Elford as 19 came off it. Paul Baldwin uncharacteristically hit the first 3 balls for successive boundaries. Baldwin was dismissed for 22 in the 4th over with the score on 37! It was left to Allen (22), Paul Jones (37*) and Danny Hackett (31*) too steer Elford home, slowly picking off the bad balls, easing to a 8 wicket victory securing 20 points.

Coventry Uni & RM CC vs Elford 1sts
Warwickshire Cricket League Div 5
Losing Draw

Cov 207ao
Elf 66-7

Elford were left damp, frustrated and eventually thankful to the wet weather as they had to settle for a losing draw once again. After much discussion, Elford travelled to Coventry in heavy rain with little prospect of play. However an optimistic hometeam and a break in the weather allowed the game to eventually get under way at 2.30, with a reduction a 40 overs per innings. Skipper Tony Allen importantly won the toss and duly elected to bowl first. Despite a hard and dry wicket (albeit with a damp patch on a length as well as on the crease!), the outfield was sodden on the ball quickly swelled up. Danny Haines once again made the initial breakthrough, too dismiss both openers. Despite the wet and cold conditions on the pitch, the University Bar adjacent to the pitch provided plenty of support and abuse in equal measure! A very surreal sight (and sound) to see 30 men all in drag, cheering on a cricket game in the rain! Meanwhile the action on the pitch took a decided swing towards the homeside as some ‘agriculture hitting’ elevated Cov Uni score. The introduction of Malc MacDonald (the ‘Scottish Pro’) brought about a change in the fortune, as he eventually dismissed the main Cov Uni danger man Tasseen for 116. Supported by good fielding and tight bowling, Elford got themselves back into the game and reduced the homeside from 170-4 to 207ao. Rob Collett bowled extremely well to take his first 5 wicket spell of the season picking up 5 – 16 in just over 5 overs.

With more rain falling over Tea, the pitch was increasingly more unfriendly to play on, made worse as Paul Baldwin was adjudged caught behind off the very first ball of the innings. Unfortunately his dismissal was just the prelude of bad things to come. Elford collapsed in the wet conditions, despite a breezy 21 from Rob Collett. Several more rain breaks followed as the players were on and off the pitch on regular intervals. At 42-5 Elfords innings looked as grim as the weather. However after several players slipped in the outfield, common sense prevailed as one final rain shower eventually finished the game.

Fillongley Sun XI vs Elford Sun ‘X’
Sunday Friendly
Lost by 34 runs

Fil 243-7
Elf 209-8

Elford fell 34 runs short in a good natured friendly away at Fillongley. Reduced to 10 men with a very late drop out, Elford took to the field first and were soon amongst the wickets thanks to some tight swing bowling from Tony Allen (2-35). He helped dismiss both openers thanks to some good keeping from Danny Hackett and safe pair of hands at slip by Lenny Allsop. Danny Haines (2-38) was also amongst the wickets against his former club with a nick behind to Hackett. With Fillongley three down, things could have got even worse for the homeside, as Simon Blackmore (69) was dropped first ball. However the reprieve allowed him to build a sizeable recovery with first team skipper Phil Hammond (107). It was the return of Lenny Allsop that brought about a change in fortunes, as he bowled his first spell in 2 years and his first the club in over 12! He took 3 – 29 off 6 and would surely have made it 4, without one of the easiest catches ive ever seen put down! (He shall remain nameless!) The homeside eventually finished on 243 – 7 off 40.

Elford made a steady start in reply, slowly building momentum thanks to an opening stand of 107 by Paul Baldwin & Sam Griffiths. Balders made his customary 25 while Sam went on to score a season best 91 including several hefty sixes. With an ever increasing runrate Elford lost their way a little after Griffiths dismissal, despite a quickfire 31 off 17 from skipper Danny Hackett. Elliott Allsop made his first run in senior cricket as well as remaining not out as Elford closed on 209 -8, some 34 runs short.

Elford 1sts vs Coventry Dunlop 1sts
Warwickshire Div 5
Losing Draw

Dunlop 204ao
Elford 177-9

On the hottest afternoon of the year to date, Elford skipper Tony Allen made himself the most favourite member of the team by electing to field first, having won the toss! However, there seemed to be a method in his madness as Elford were soon amongst the wickets. In an eventful first 10 overs, Elford picked up 4 wickets (and dropped 3 catches) while the visitors scored 65 runs! Danny Haines took the first 3 wickets with some short pitched bowling, while the evergreen Rob Drabble picked up the other early wicket. The game calmed a little after, as Dunlop consolidated their innings until the unlikely introduction of Malc MacDoanld made the breakthrough. Despite not taking a wicket, he helped set up 2 run outs in his first couple of overs.  Paul Baldwin promptly came into the attack and took a wicket with his first ball, while yet another run out reduced to Dunlop to 9 down. A couple of late boundaries helped the vistors past the 200 mark before being bowled out in the 47th over.

With 53 overs to use, Elford got off to another very steady start thanks to Paul Baldwin 22 and Tony Allen 20. Having reached 57-1 off 23 overs, Elford were some way behind the runrate. However, with wickets in hand, the openers allowed the middle order to build the runchase thanks mainly to Danny Hackett. He looked in good touch as he hit 47, as partners around him came and went. The introduction of Paul Jones and Malc MacDoanld got the game going again as the pair put on 49 in just a few overs. After their dismissals though, with just 1 wicket remaining and some 30 runs short, Elford decided to opt for the draw. Danny Haines and John Ross saw off the last 5 overs to make sure Elford had a share of the points.

Elford Sun XI vs Centre Set
Lichfield League Div 4
Lost by 17 runs

CSCC 255-4
Elf 238ao

Elfords Sunday winning streak came to an end as they fell disappointingly 17 runs short on another warm afternoon. Elford once again fielded first in the heat and struggled in the summer sun with just 4 wickets being taken. Centre Set notched up 255-4 with the wickets being shared around the bowlers. Despite needing over 6 an over, Elfords batsman all made starts. Opener Sam Griffiths top scored with 62, while there were also notable contributions from Steph Hollingsworth 30, Malc MacDonald 29, Danny Hackett 28 and Paul Jones 28. Despite the good starts, none of them went onto make a big score to help set up the victory, leaving the tail just a little to much to do, falling 17 runs short in the final over.

Wilnecote 1sts Vs Elford 1sts
Warwickshire Div 5
Elford lost by 110 runs

Wiln 227 – 7
Elf 117 ao

Elfords losing streak continued as their fell to a heavy defeat away at local rivals Wilnecote. In the first meeting between the two clubs since 2003, Elford elected to bowl first on a sunny and blustery afternoon. Elford soon found themselves in a commanding position in the game thanks to Paul Baldwin & Danny Haines. The pair put the skids on Wilnecote as the homeside were reduced to 63-6 off 20 overs, with Baldwin picking up 4-36 against his old club. However, Elfords early dominance slipped away as Wilnecote stole the advantage with some sloppy fielding and heavy hitting. The Wilnecote trio of Wayne, Corcoran and Yorke scored 165 between them to take the game away from Elford, to reach a competitive 227-7.

Elfords innings never got started despite a very good cameo from Rob Collett who scored an unbeaten 61 before running out of partners. Elfords innings included 4 ducks and despite some good fielding and bowling from Wilnecote, Elfords batsman were their own worst enemies. A disappointing derby day for Elford, which had and should have delivered far more from a commanding early position.

Elford vs Guildfordians 2nds
Lichfield Cricket League 4
Elf won by 62 runs

The Sunday made it back to back opening wins as they comfortably saw of the challenge of Guildfordians. Batting first, the Elford batsman put their Saturday woes behind them scoring with ease and speed. Second team skipper Sam Griffiths raced to 48 before being caught, while Steph Hollingsworth scored his highest total for the club with 64 off 57 balls. Sunday Captain, Danny Hackett was next to take up the runchase as he top scored with an unbeaten 81, helping lead Elford to 254-6 off 40 overs.  Guildfordians runchase was pegged back by some tight bowling as almost all the Elford bowlers got amongst the wickets. Paul Baldwin (1-17 off 8) and Tony Allen (2-18 off 8) bowled economically, while the evergreen Malc MacDonald made amends for his golden duck with 1-23 off 6. Tom Marshall bought a couple of wickets picking up 2 -44 while Sam Griffiths also chipped in with a late wicket to reduce the visitors to 192-7.

Elford 1sts vs Newdigate 1sts
Warwickshire Div 5
Lost by 3 wkts
Elf 161-7
New 162 – 7

Elford were left to rue the fact they could only muster 9 men for the 1st team as they slipped to a 3 wicket defeat. In near Baltic conditions and occasional driving rain, Elford made a solid start thanks to the dependable Paul Baldwin and the inform Rob Collett. With tight bowling from the visitors, the first 20 overs saw the runs and wickets total rarely change. However Rob Collett led the way with 67, helped by Danny Hackett (26), as the pair put on 69 for the 3rd wicket. Paul Jones played a late cameo with a quickfire 24 to help Elford reach 161-7 off 50 overs.

Elford decided to attack to stand any chance of victory and were soon rewarded by some tight and aggressive bowling from Danny Haines. He dismissed the first 3 batsman to reduce the visitors to 37-3 off 10. With Elford briefly reduced to just 8 men in the field, the runs kept coming with ease despite Elfords best efforts. A stunning diving catch from Paul Jones helped kick start another Elford resurgence as Paul Baldwin bowled with pace to take 3 more quick wickets. On 117 for 6 for game was poised but Newdiage held their nerve exploiting the gaps in the field, helped by their captain who remained unbeaten on 65. Rob Drabble took a late wicket, but it was a ‘bridge to far’ for Elford who would have surely ensured a much tighter finish had they 11 fielders.

Tamworth 2nds vs Elford Sun XI
Lichfield League Div 4
Won by 6 wkts
Tam 117ao
Elf 118-4

Elford Sun got off to a winning start against a young Tamworth side. Bowling first, Elford made early inroads into the Tamworth Innings as Tony Allen took a wicket with the first ball of the game. Stu Edgar bowled very economically conceding just 7 runs off 8 overs to take 3 wickets in the process. Paul Baldwin picked a tidy 3-16 off 8, while there were also wickets for both the Griffiths brothers. Tamworth were bowled out for 117 with Captain Gary Taylor top scoring with 54. Elford got off to a flying start as another Griffiths combination, this time father (Chris) and son (sam),  scored 40 off the first 5 overs. Elford wobbled slightly as Tomson took 3 wickets for Tamworth reducing Elford to 61-4 before Tony Allen 40* and Stu Edgar 16* saw the game out for a comfortable victory.

Stockingford 1sts vs Elford 1sts

WCL 5
Lost by 5 wkts

Elf 104ao
Sto 105-5

Elford lost their opening game of the season as they failed to score enough runs on a damp early season wicket. Despite Hackett’s, dismissal to a ‘tennis shot’ early on, Elford started brightly enough with Paul Baldwin (22) and Rob Collett (32) looking set. Once again though, Elford managed to press the self destruct button with the bat as they promptly collapsed from 78 – 2 to 104 ao in the 45th over.

With a small total on the board, Elford remained positive in the field and were rewarded as Danny Haines and Rob Collett tore into the top order. Haines picked up 3 – 32 off 10 helped by a stunning one handed catch at slip by Rob Collett; as they pair reduced the homeside to 38-4 of 13 overs. Even a timeout was on the cards as the Stockingford batsman scrambled to get their pads on! However the small total was slowly chased down diligently by Stockingfords middle order, as Elford couldn’t quite make the breakthrough needed. Tom Marshall showed promise again, as he took a wicket with his 3rd ball with the scores level! A disappointing result for Elford, but plenty of positives with the bowling and fielding.

Elford Sun XI vs Essington & Great Wyrley 2nd XI
Sun 25th April 2010
Sunday Friendly
Lost by 59 runs

EGW2 120ao
Elford 61ao

Having elected to field first, skipper Danny Hackett was soon rewarded by his opening bowlers who tore into the visitors top order. After 10 overs Wyrley had been reduced to 26-6, before the experienced Mark Smith steadied the middle order.  Elford continued to swap the bowling around and were rewarded by good spells by everyone, despite Wyrley recovering to pass the 100 mark. A notable menbtion to Tom Marshall who’s first ball took a wicket with the’ wrong un’. Danny Haines came back at the end to wrap up proceedings to take 5 – 21 off 7, as he looked somewhere near match fit for the first time in 18 months.

Elfords reply was not that short and not that sweet, as they looked a little rusty with the bat. Paul Baldwin pre season form continued as he scored a third of the innings total with 26! With 4 other Ducks including Rob Drabble golden quacker, (playing a defensive shot – a lesson to be leant me thinks), Elfords inning soon petered out to a disappointing 61ao. Despite a poor batting performance including several self inflicted run outs, Elford can take plenty of positives with the ball, with good bowling spells by everyone.

Elford 1sts Vs Walmley 3rds
Sat 17th April 2010
Saturday Friendly
Losing Draw

Wal 167-8
Elf 145-5

Danny Hackett scored the first half century of the season as he helped earn Elford a draw against fellow Division 5 side Walmley. Having elected to field first, Elford had helped restrict the visitors to 165-8 thanks mainly to Paul Baldwin 3 – 26  and Stu Edgar 2 – 22. Helped by tight fielding and catches taken, Elford looked a little better in the field than the previous week. Once again Paul Baldwin helped to cement up the innings with an economical 32 from 102 balls! Despite the boycott jibes, ill say to any batsman you don’t score runs in the pavilion! The much improved Chris Griffiths looked good for 19, while Ian Redgate looks to have grown in confidence with some new found aggressive shots. Another positive day all round with all 11 players adding something useful to the side.

Elford 1sts Vs St Matthews Burntwood
Sat 10th April 2010
Saturday Friendly
Won by 9 runs

Elf 100ao
SMB 91ao

Elford somehow managed to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat on an unusually hot April afternoon. Having collapsed to 20-5 after 7 overs, deja vu was rearing its disturbing head. Mutterings of ‘another long season’ soon were being branded about, before Haines & Baldwin joined forces once again. With some members of the team wishing they’d be anywhere in the world bar watching dot ball after dot ball, the due dug deep again and slowly eked out the runs. The pair put on 55 before Haines chased a wide one, while Baldwin went on to top score with a very well earned 43. The platform was just enough for the tail to push onto 100 before being bowled out.

Despite a good start from the Elford bowlers, St Matthews looked in relative comfort at 71 - 3 off 19 overs. However a collapse the home side would usually be proud ensued as Elford turned the screw to bowl out the visitors 9 runs short of the target. Danny Haines, Sam Griffiths & Paul Baldwin all took 3 wickets a piece on a winning start to the season.
