Lichfield Cricket League History - Overview

Review of the 1998 Season

Division 1 was dominated by Hammerwich 1sts, who duly won their first title as well as the Knock-Out Cup, and Lichfield 1sts. If the final game had been played, either side could have won the league. Hammerwich winning by four points. Whittington challenged at the start of the season but eventually fell away to finish forth., one point behind Armitage.

Armitage the scourge of all teams, could not maintain their challenge but with a change at the helm and rebuilding in the future, will come again. For the remaining teams it was a case of consolidating their positions and avoiding relegation. Lynn, after struggling to field a side unfortunately disbanded and left the league. St Matthews, promoted in 1997, and Longdon were relegated to Division 2.

Rushall, in their first year romped away with Division 2 and, on this form, will surely pose a threat in Division 1. They were closely shadowed by Wall who eventually ran out of steam.

The formation of Division Three in 1999 means Armitage 2nds, Hammerwich 2nds, Acton Trussell and Elford, new clubs Great Wyrley, Cannock & Rugeley 2nds and Rugeley 2nds and the Gate in that Division.

Division 2 will be made up from, Centre Set, Longdon, Alrewas, Wall, St Matthews, C&R 1sts, Rugeley 1sts and Lichfield 2nds.
