Lichfield Cricket League History - Overview
The League 1991 - 2001

The League was inaugurated in the winter of 1990-91 by a nucleus of clubs in the Lichfield area who had already being playing each other for a number of years. There reason behind the decision was that a more competitive edge may result from the formation of the League. Some reservations were expressed by some original members about the merits of forming the league, but due to the persuasive and forceful nature of the then Chairman, Bob Tanner from Whittington CC and the enthusiastic and equally forceful John Jennings from Armitage CC, the league was established in 1991.

Only one fixture was played between the clubs in the first few seasons and the application of rules and regulations was somewhat haphazard. However, gradually as more teams joined the league and the need for more divisions became apparent two fixtures between teams was introduced, and the rules and regulations were adjusted for a more professional approach in running the league.

The intention of the League was always to encompass all the local teams and to naturally expand outward at the will of the league members. We have been delighted  to welcome over the last few years many of the major clubs in the area. From the original ten clubs and one Division we know have 28 teams including 9 second XIs. Unfortunately we have lost some teams on the way, two of which to disbandment. We are now settled with eight teams in the top two division and six in the Division 3 and 4. Our most pressing aim is two get the divisions filled up to strength.

Our continuing attempt to improve communication between the clubs particularly with reference to the results and league tables has resulted in the creation of a League website, which hopefully will prove useful and informative.

Here's to the next 10 years!
